The Chemistry of Welding is a hands-on chemistry lesson for 5-15 students that is based on the uses of the noble gases as grouped in the periodic table of the elements. Students burn iron with oxygen to form iron oxide (rust) then use argon to prevent chemical reactions in molten steel. Chemical metallurgy of iron and steel, as well as physical work hardening of metallic crystals are introduced. Students don protective gear and use a MIG Welder to join scraps of steel together to create art works that they can take home.
